Hario V60 Brewing Guide
Go back to basics with this simple method for making the most of your coffee beans. It delivers incredibly clear flavours and aromas that will allow you to enjoy the most subtle nuances of your coffee.
What you’ll need
- Hario V60 brewer
- Hario V60 filters
- Grinder
- 21g ground coffee
- Hot water, just off the boil (around 96℃)
- Scales
- Timer
- Mug
- Brewing carafe (optional)
The method
This method is incredibly easy to follow and also achieves consistent results. Proper measurements and an appreciation for time will allow you to achieve the perfect cup.
- Fold your Hario V60 filter into a cone and place this in the Hario V60 brewer. You need to rinse the filter to remove any paper residue that could impact the flavour. Pour hot water over the filter to ensure it is completely wet, then allow the water to drain and discard the water.
- Measure 21g of coffee and grind to the size of coarse sea salt. Add the coffee to the brewer.
- Saturate the coffee with water just off the boil. Just cover the grounds and let the coffee bloom for around 15 seconds. The bloom is when the coffee bubbles up as the carbon dioxide is released.
- Pour water on the coffee in a smooth spiral every 10-15 seconds. This should achieve a smooth and consistent brew. Make sure you are pouring on the dark spots and avoiding the light spots. If you’re using a scale, stop when you hit 360g.
- After 3 minutes, stop pouring and remove the brewer. You should have around 285ml of freshly brewed coffee. Pour into a warmed coffee mug.
Top tips
- If you’re making this for 2 people, simply double the coffee and the water.
- Trust your instincts, experiment and learn what works best for you.
