French Press Brewing Guide
The French Press is a mainstay in many kitchens. It’s a simple and effective way to brew multiple cups of coffee in minutes.
What you’ll need
- French Press
- 56g freshly ground coffee
- Grinder
- Hot water, just off the boil (around 96℃)
- Coffee paddle
- Scale
- Timer
The method
This method rewards patience and a smooth plunge. Take care when cleaning your French Press to avoid damaging the plunger filter, as this can lead to a gritty drink.
- Warm up your French Press by rinsing it with hot water. This will help to accelerate the brewing process.
- Measure out 56g of coffee and grind to the consistency of breadcrumbs. Add this to the bottom of the French Press.
- Start your time as you begin to add water to the French Press. Fill it about half way, aiming the water at the larger clumps of coffee to break them up.
- At 1 minute, stir the coffee with a wooden paddle to make sure the coffee is fully immersed. Top up to the top and then place the plunger on top without pressing down.
- In 4 minutes, you’re ready to plunge and serve.
Top tips
- Pour the coffee immediately to avoid over extraction, this can lead to a murky and unpleasant flavour.
- Always use wooden implements with your French press to avoid accidentally smashing the glass.
